Northwest Colorado Energy Initiative (NCEI)

Pioneering energy strategies on the next American energy frontier, the Northwest Colorado Energy Initiative (NCEI) is a bold, regional effort to reimagine the future of communities transitioning from coal-based economies. With $1.1 million secured for research, outreach, and education, NCEI explores promising pathways including nuclear, hydrogen, alternative coal uses, and other cutting-edge energy solutions. Grounded in our region’s strengths—an experienced workforce, resilient infrastructure, and the grit to adapt—NCEI is charting a future built on innovation, opportunity, and lasting impact.

Key elements of the initiative include:

  • Community-led energy transition planning
  • Site readiness for industrial reuse and innovation hubs
  • Workforce upskilling and industry partnerships
  • Access to state and federal resources

This is how energy communities move forward—with purpose and planning.
